1946 Flying Squirrel – Water Cooled

The term ‘steampunk’ is first attributed to writer K. W. Jeter in 1987. So the manufacturers of Scott motorcycles could not possibly have imagined that they had invented a genre 60 years beforehand. But they did a great job of it!

What zany machines. These renders have been lifted from actual photos of the bikes for clarity. Taken at the Classic Festival at Pukekohe Park early in the century. Founded in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1908, Scott became known for water-cooled two-stroke twins, winning the Isle of Man Senior TT in 1912 and 1913.

The Flying Squirrel was released in 1926. Following the original company’s liquidation in 1950, production continued in Birmingham until 1978.
